A Smile That Won’t Wash Away

Sarah McLachlan’s “Building a Mystery”. The chorus:

“You live in a church
Where you sleep with voodoo dolls
And you won’t give up the search
For the ghosts in the halls
You wear sandals in the snow
And a smile that won’t wash away
Can you look out the window
Without your shadow getting in the way?”

Wednesday was my first O. Chem. test, which went well, I think. It made me nervous because there was no vocab or memorizing involved- just fussing with my molecular modeling kit to find the stereoisotopes. We’re getting our grades back tomorrow.

Thursday was the S’mores (Sophomore) Dinner. Got better food than normal and in exchange had to sit down with my adviser and about six or seven other sophomores so we could “discuss our futures”. It was fun, but mostly because my adviser is a cool guy and was very relaxed about the whole thing. With someone else it could have easily gotten boring very fast. It was interesting to me because most of the other students at the table were very focused on being able to go abroad next year, which I can’t do since I still want to do the double major.

That night I got to relax a bit as well, and so had a chance to watch Good Will Hunting. It was enjoyable, though a little cliched. The acting made up for most of the predictability, though, and it was nice to see Ben Affleck in a role that didn’t grate on my nerves. Another good part was the love interest- she was spunky and very different. Also healthy for Will, since she was capable of keeping him in line. The whole “It’s not your fault.” thing and Will breaking down and crying was obnoxious though, because it was totally unrealistic. But all in all, a movie worth watching. I needed something with a happy ending after all the BSG I’ve been watching.

Friday we made pirozhki filling again, for the people who hadn’t made it last week. This time Maria decided she wanted to try putting egg in with the cabbage, which was yummy in a different way than the first bunch. A couple of Russian 101 students and two upper level students joined us, and we spoke mostly in English.

That night I also watched the House season premiere (I’m a week late since I’m watching them online). It was very feel-good, and very anti-House. Makes me wonder what they can possibly do with the rest of the season. Not all that predictable, though, which was nice. And sort of believable. We shall see where this goes.

Saturday I decided I was sick of pirozhki making, so I fled the apartment and went downtown. Got my glasses straightened, returned some books to the library, and then took the MAX across Steel Bridge and walked back on the other side. There’s a nice strip of land on either side of the river all the way from Steel Bridge to Sellwood that’s reserved for pedestrians and bicyclists. On the east side, the path actually floats on the water for a ways. So I sat down and listened to some music and watched life go by. It was sunny and the perfect temperature, so I was in my own little zen state.

Finally went back to the apartment at 4:30. Haylie (one of the upper level students) was still there from the pirozhki-making, and she suggested that we all go to Joanne Fabrics, since she has a car. Went past the bins on the way, which is where Goodwill dumps everything they don’t want. It’s a HUGE building, and I’ve heard you can get some totally awesome stuff there, so we’ll have to go adventuring down there sometime.

Stopped at a neat, brand-new playground on the way and played on the swings and the ginormous rope jungle gym before going to Joanne’s, where Ella and Haylie (both knitters) got some really soft yarn, and we all pitched in for sidewalk chalk.

Then went back to the apartment building and watched Chocolat, complete with chocolate kisses and hot chocolate, in the lounge with the fire going. So, today is my OMG I really have to do homework day.
